Dreaming of Michelangelo

Featuring music written 500 years apart, the Rossini Club presents an eclectic array of startling works, echoing each other respectively both in their prescience and their sumptuous complexity. Works of the early and late Renaissance by Johannes Ockeghem and Girolamo Frescobaldi performed by Nantucket artists Nick Davies and Isaiah Williams are contrasted through a convex mirror in Judith Shatin’s Ockeghem Variations and György Ligeti’s wildly imaginative Ten Pieces for woodwind quintet.

...Is That All?

Music of Eastern Europe, particularly music of Hungary, has long inspired composers from Haydn to Brahms and beyond to stretch and adapt their musical language to the idiosyncrasies of this region. Two of the most important composers of the 20th century, Béla Bartók and György Ligeti, were Hungarian, the former reinventing the definition of folk music, and the latter taking us to worlds hereto unimagined. Brahms’ famous Hungarian Dances also make an appearance in this diverse program paying homage to a rich musical tradition.

In a performance celebrating classical music of the last 40 years, the Rossini Club returns to the Atheneum to honor the centennials of two legendary composers: Hungarian composer György Ligeti, and honorary Nantucket composer Ned Rorem, who passed away late last year. Ligeti’s Horn Trio from 1982 is a turning point in the composer’s career, an inventive and bizarre work dedicated to Brahms’ work of the same instrumentation that evokes the whimsy and absurdism Ligeti was best known for. Rorem’s Winter Pages takes the form of a musical journal, cataloging various aspects of the composer’s life in the winter of 1981 in manners both lyrical and mercurial.

“I am in a prison: one wall is the avant-garde, the other wall is the past, and I want to escape.” So said György Ligeti during a creative crisis that spanned almost a half decade of his later life. The result of such a crisis was his profound Horn Trio, a mature work that synthesized both the avant-garde and the traditional during a time of deep musical and political polarization. Inspired by both Beethoven and Brahms, who also feature in this unique concert, Ligeti’s alluring Trio remains one of the most influential and important chamber works post-1950.

Brahms: Horn Trio, Op. 40
Beethoven: Piano Sonata #26 in E-flat, Op. 81a “Les adieux”

Two of his works, the lush Nantucket Songs and the diary-like Winter Pages, will be performed by Nantucket artists including soprano Greta Feeney, cellist Ethan Philbrick and clarinetist Nick Davies. To complement these works, two pieces by Hungarian composers György Ligeti and Béla Bartók fill out the program.
